California Income Tax Forms Rates & Services

An individual must file a return if either their gross income, or their adjusted gross income, was more than the amount defined by law. California residents must include their total worldwide gross income to determine their filing requirement.

Part-year residents must file a return if they have any income taxable by California and their income from all sources is more than the filing requirement amounts for residents. Nonresidents must file a return if they have any California based income, and their income from all sources is more than the filing requirement amounts for residents.

There are 3 main divisions for specific information regarding California taxes.

The State Board of Equalization was developed to serve the public through fair, effective, and efficient tax administration, and was initially charged with responsibility for ensuring that county property tax assessment practices were equal and uniform throughout the state.

The Franchise Tax Board serves to administer California's major tax programs, including personal income tax, corporation tax, the administering of the Homeowner and Renter Assistance (HRA) program, delinquent debt collection, and other non-tax programs.

The Employment Development Department promotes California's economic growth by providing services to keep employers, employees, and job seekers competitive.
