Maine Income Tax Forms Rates & Services
Maine implements an income tax on all individuals that have Maine generated income. The income tax rates are graduated, with rates ranging from 2% to 8.5%.
Yearly residents must pay Maine taxes on all of your income regardless of the sources. If you are subject to income tax by another state or country on some of this same income, you may be allowed a tax credit for all, or some, of the tax paid to the other state or jurisdiction.
Nonresidents of Maine must also pay Maine taxes on all income from work performed in Maine.
Part-year residents must pay tax on all income generated during the part of the year domiciled as a Maine resident, as well as on any income resulting from Maine sources during the part of the year you were a nonresident.
Eligible Maine residents can receive a partial refund of property taxes assessed and/or rent paid during 2006 on their primary residence. You may qualify for a refund if:
- you do not have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2006 household income was $80,750 or less; or
- you do have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2006 household income was $105,750 or less, AND
- your 2006 property tax was more than 4% of your 2006 household income; or
- the rent you paid in 2006 was more than 20% of your 2006 household income.
Seniors do not need to meet this requirement when their household income is below $13,200 for those living alone, or below $16,300 for those living with a spouse or dependent.
