Ohio Income Tax Forms Rates & Services
Residents are required to file Ohio taxes unless:
- You are single, age 65 or older, AND your federal adjusted gross income is less than $11,400 and you have no schedule A adjustments;
- You are married, filing jointly, age 65 or older, AND your federal adjusted gross income is less than $12,800 and you have no schedule A adjustments;
- Your only source of income is retirement income that is eligible for the Retirement Income Credit AND the credit is the same or larger than your tax before credits;
- You are eligible for the senior citizen credit and your tax before credits is $50 or less;
- Your exemption amount is the same as, or more than, your Ohio adjusted gross income.
Ohio state law requires an exemption of the following from municipal taxation:
- Military pay or allowances.
- Income of religious, charitable, or educational institutions to the extent derived from tax-exempt property or activities.
- Public utilities that are subject to the public utility excise tax.
- Interest and dividends.
In addition, municipalities generally exempt the following:
- Old-age pensions and disability benefits.
- Capital gains and losses.
A new refundable tax credit against the corporation franchise tax, individual income tax or dealers in intangibles tax is available to owners of historic buildings. This credit is equal to 25% of the owner's qualifying rehabilitation expenses that are incurred in the restoration of a historic building.
