(Virginia Beach, VA) Andrew Starks, an eighth grade pre-algebra teacher at Whitten Middle School is a winner of the “My Refund Story/Double My Refund Contest.” Miss Liberty Tax, Brittney Wojtaszek officially presented the check to Andrew Starks at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20 during a surprise visit to his classroom. A professional film crew accompaniedMiss Liberty Tax to record the story and share it on the “My Refund Story/Double My Refund” website: www.myrefundstory.com.
“For his dedication to his profession and to his students, we felt that Andrew is very deserving of this extra money at tax time,” added John Hewitt, CEO and founder of Liberty Tax Service.
Starks was selected as a winner in the “My Refund Story/Double My Refund Contest” after sharing his struggle to pay off his college loans while also paying out of his own pocket for school supplies for his classroom and students.
In addition to Andrew’s double refund, OfficeMax will join Liberty Tax on Tuesday to surprise Andrew with $1,000 in much-needed school supplies to help reduce his personal classroom costs. The donation is being made through OfficeMax’s A Day Made Better program, which helps provide economic relief and encourages national support for teachers.
About Andrew Starks
After completing his education six years ago and ready for a change of scenery, Andrew Starks made a geographical move a few months ago from New York to Mississippi to accept a job teaching pre-algebra at Whitten Middle School. Like many dedicated teachers, Starks makes many out-of-pocket purchases of paper, pencils and other miscellaneous school supplies to help his students reach their potential. These quickly add up to a thousand dollars or more a year. Add to that the challenge of paying off student loans. Starks wrote in his entry:
“I would love nothing more than to be able to afford all the amenities that my students need to succeed in this ever demanding world, but I feel as though my financial crisis is leaving students out of luck at times. If I were to get a generous refund this year I would spend it where it needs to be spent. Not on me, but on my students. This would allow me to take care of my financial needs with the money I make from work, and still have enough left to give back to my community. I greatly appreciate the chance to win this story telling competition. I can be having a terrible day and any time one kid gets it makes my day."
