Liberty Tax Urges Taxpayers to Act Now to File 2007 Tax Returns and Claim Refunds Due

(Virginia Beach, VA)  Over 1.1 million Americans can collect refund money from the IRS from tax year 2007 if they file their 2007 returns by April 18, 2011.  There’s more than $1.1 billion outstanding, with the median amount owed averaging about $640.  Liberty Tax Service urges taxpayers who can claim refunds from 2007 to file a paper return before the April 18 deadline, or they will forfeit their refunds to the U.S. Treasury.

Taxpayers qualifying for 2007 refunds who also haven’t filed 2008 and 2009 returns must also file those so that the IRS won’t hold their refund checks for 2007 returns.  If the taxpayer had a tax liability for 2008 or 2009 and didn’t file returns for those years, the amount of any refund for 2007 will be applied to that debt.  It will also be applied to offset delinquent child support or student loan debt.

“The IRS allows you to claim refund money due back to three years,” said John Hewitt, CEO of Liberty Tax Service.  “There’s never a penalty charge when the IRS owes you money and you haven’t filed during those three years.”

Some of those lower and middle income taxpayers who are due a refund for 2007 may not have claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit, and may qualify for it.  Others may have had taxes withheld, but weren’t required to file a tax return because of their low total income.
