    The Internal Revenue Service today issued its 2010 “dirty dozen” list of tax scams, including schemes involving return preparer fraud, hiding income offshore and phishing.
3.12.10   IRS Seeks New Issues for the Industry Issue Resolution Program 
    The Internal Revenue Service is encouraging business taxpayers, associations and other interested parties to submit to the Industry Issue Resolution (IIR) Program tax issues for resolution involving a controversy, a dispute or an unnecessary burden on business taxpayers.

    The Internal Revenue Service today announced the release of the 2009 IRS Data Book, an annual snapshot of agency activities for the fiscal year.
3.09.10   IRS Outlines Additional Steps to Assist Unemployed Taxpayers and Others 
    The Internal Revenue Service today announced several additional steps it is taking this tax season to help people having difficulties meeting their tax obligations because of unemployment or other financial problems.
3.09.10   IRS Announces Qualified Disaster Treatment for Chile 
    Washington The Internal Revenue Service today issued guidance designating the earthquake that occurred in Chile in February 2010 as a qualified disaster for federal tax purposes. The guidance allows individuals who receive qualified disaster relief payments from any person to exclude those payments from income on their tax returns. Also, the guidance allows employer-sponsored private foundations to assist employee-victims in areas affected by this earthquake without affecting their tax-exempt status.

  The Internal Revenue Service today announced it is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC), which provides feedback on the policies, programs and procedures of electronic tax administration.
1.29.10   Taxpayers in Nine States and the District of Columbia File with Different Centers this Year 
    The Internal Revenue Service announced today that some taxpayers who file paper income tax returns will send them to different processing centers this year.
1.29.10   Free Tax Help Available Nationwide 
    Nearly 12,000 free tax preparation sites will be open nationwide this year as the Internal Revenue Service continues to expand its partnerships with nonprofit and community organizations performing vital tax preparation services for low-income and elderly taxpayers.
1.29.10   IRS Marks EITC Awareness Day; Highlights Expanded Tax Credit
    An expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) means larger families will qualify for a larger credit, offering greater relief for people who struggled through difficult financial times last year, the Internal Revenue Service said today.

    People who give to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

1.21.10   The IRS Reminds Tax-Exempt Organizations of All Sizes to File the Form 990 on Time to Preserve Their Tax Exempt Status 
    The Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax-exempt organizations to make sure they file their annual information form on time. In 2010 the tax-exempt status of any non-profit that has not filed the required form in the last three years will be revoked.
1.21.10   COBRA Subsidy Eligibility Period Extended Through February; 15-Months Subsidy Now Available to Those Who Qualify 
    Workers who lose their jobs during January and February may qualify for a 65-percent subsidy on their COBRA health insurance premiums, and these newly-eligible individuals, along with those already receiving the subsidy, can now receive it for up to 15 months, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

    The Internal Revenue Service has created a new Web-based tool to help small business owners determine which tax-favored pension plan best suits their needs and how to keep their plans in compliance.
10.09.09   IRS and GWU Host 22nd Annual International Tax Conferences 
    Senior law professors from the George Washington University Law School will join with officials from the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service and representatives of the tax authorities of foreign governments to discuss significant tax compliance and treaty issues at the 22nd Annual Institute on Current Issues in International Taxation.
10.08.09   Oct. 17 is Last Day for Businesses to Request Tax Credit Certification for Some New Hire 
    Businesses planning to claim the recently-expanded work opportunity tax credit for eligible unemployed veterans and disconnected youth hired before mid-September now have until Oct. 17 to request the certification required for these workers, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
10.07.09   Special Sales Tax Deduction for Car Purchases Available through End of 2009 
    With 2010 models arriving in dealer showrooms, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that purchasing a new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle could qualify them for a special deduction for the state and local sales and excise taxes on their 2009 tax returns.
10.01.09   Taxpayers Have Until Oct. 15 to File Extended 2008 Tax Returns; Offshore Voluntary Disclosures Also Due 
    The Oct. 15 deadline is fast approaching for millions of taxpayers who requested a six-month extension to file their 2008 tax returns.It’s also the deadline for special voluntary disclosures by taxpayers with assets in previously undisclosed offshore financial accounts.
