Recently I was hanging out with a good friend of mine, who admittedly, doesn’t know a lot about the economy or taxes, but said, “Why doesn’t the government just get the hell out of our way?”
I was stunned by her comment, which came after a brief discussion about the Affordable Care Act. She continued, “I don’t claim to be an expert, but if people are hungry, they will go to work, if they aren’t they won’t.”
A very good point I thought to myself. And it brings up a great question regarding economical policies and that is, “When is governmental intervention too much?”
Winston Churchill once said, “We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.” Mr. Churchill had a way with words and that is one of the best visuals for what our current environment feels like.
It feels as though so many people are pulling and lifting as hard as possible, yet we are going no where. Unemployment rates are still high, foreclosures are still at record high’s, those who are working are earning less and less and the future, and economically speaking appears to be bleak.
What is one change that you would make to the tax system? We would love to hear your thoughts! Share in the comments below.
