The Non-family Adoption Credit is a one-time credit that may be applied to personal income tax upon the adoption of a child or children by the taxpayer(s). The child or children cannot be related to the taxpayer(s) by blood or marriage and must be under the age of eighteen years at the time of adoption. The credit for each adoption is $2,000, and may be taken in the year of the adoption or over a period of three years.

Currently there are two separate Code provisions to ease tax burdens for senior citizens on their West Virginia taxes:

  • Senior citizens may modify their taxable income by up to $8,000 based on income received by each spouse, and
  • Low income senior citizens ($14,700 individually or $19,800 for two-person households) who qualify for the Homestead Exemption may be entitled to a tax credit equal to the property tax paid on the first $10,000, or portion thereof, of the taxable assessed value over the $20,000 Homestead Exemption.
