General Instructions

The New Jersey Division of Taxation grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file until October 15, 2015 if you are filing for a federal extension and have paid at least 80% of your total 2014 tax liability.

You are only required to file for a New Jersey extension, if:

  • You are not applying for a federal extension; or
  • You are required to remit a tax payment in order to have at least 80% of your actual tax liability paid

If you are not applying for a federal extension, you can still obtain an extension to file your New Jersey gross income tax return by doing the following:

  • File Form NJ-630 by the original due date of the return
  • Pay at least 80% of your actual tax liability by the original due date or the extension will be denied.
  • File the final return by the extended due date together with any balance of tax due.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

To avoid interest and penalties you must have paid at least 80% of your current year tax liability by April 15, 2015 and submit your New Jersey return by October 15, 2015.

Pay your taxes online at the New Jersey Division of Taxation website. E-Check and credit cards are accepted. There is no need to send in the payment voucher if you pay online.

You can also pay your taxes online at Official Payments Corporation. Visa, MasterCard, Discover Network, and American Express credit and debit cards, and other forms of payment, such as Bill Me Later® are accepted. To make a debit card payment you can use a MasterCard or Visa Debit Card or any debit card with Nyce, Pulse or Star logos. There is no need to send in the payment voucher if you pay online.

There is a convenience fee for this service which is paid directly to the company. The amount of the fee is based on the amount of your payment.

Pay your taxes by phone by calling Official Payments toll-free at 1-800-272-9829. This automated service is available 24 hours, 7 days a week. At the end of your call you will be given a confirmation number. Save this as proof of payment for your records.

If the 80% requirement is not met, the extension will be retroactively denied and penalty and interest charges will be imposed from the original due date of the return.

  • Late filing penalties of 5% per month or fraction thereof for each month the return is late, up to a maximum of 25% of the balance of tax due with the return; and $100 per month or fraction thereof that the return is late.
  • Late payment penalty of 5% of any tax balance due.
  • Interest, computed at the rate of 3 percentage (3%) points above the prime rate for every month or fraction of a month the tax is unpaid, compounded annually. At the end of each calendar year, any tax, penalties and interest remaining due will become part of the balance on which interest is charged.

The New Jersey Division of Taxation only requires you to file for an extension of time to file until October 15, 2015 if you have paid at least 80% of your total 2014 tax liability or are due a refund.
