General Instructions

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance now uses an online system exclusively to submit requests for a six-month extension of time to file Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return, or Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year resident Income Tax Return. The extension request must be made electronically before April 15, 2015.

You must request the extension of time to file on or before the due date of your return. Request your extension online.

  • You can complete your request using the online service.
  • You must e-file your extension if you prepare your extension using software that supports e-file.
  • If your paid preparer is required to e-file your tax return, and is also preparing your extension request, the preparer must e-file your extension request.

The online and e-file options provide you with a confirmation that your extension request has been received.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

To avoid penalties you must pay the full amount of your current year tax liability on or before April 15, 2015 and submit the balance with your New York return by October 15, 2015.

Pay your taxes online at The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website. You can pay directly from your bank account or credit card. A convenience fee will be charged when paying by credit card.

You can also pay your taxes online at Official Payments Corporation. Visa, MasterCard, Discover Network, and American Express credit and debit cards, and other forms of payment, such as Bill Me Later® are accepted. To make a debit card payment you can use a MasterCard or Visa Debit Card or any debit card with Nyce, Pulse or Star logos. If you choose this payment method, be sure to keep the confirmation number as proof of payment for your records.

There is a convenience fee for this service which is paid directly to the company. The amount of the fee is based on the amount of your payment.

Pay your taxes by phone by calling Official Payments toll-free at 1-800-272-9829. This automated service is available 24 hours, 7 days a week. At the end of your call you will be given a confirmation number. Save this as proof of payment for your records.

Along with the payment voucher, send a check or money order in the amount of the estimated tax due made payable to New York State Income Tax. (If filing a joint return, write the Social Security number of only the taxpayer whose name will appear first on the return.) Mail to:

Interest will be charged on income tax that is not paid on or before the due date of your return, even if you received an extension of time to file your return. Interest is compounded daily and the rate is adjusted quarterly.

In addition you may be subject to the following penalties:

  • Late Payment: If you do not pay your tax liability when due (determined with regard to any extension of time to pay), you will have to pay a penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid amount for each month or part of a month it is not paid, up to a maximum of 25%.
  • Late Filing Penalty: If you do not file on time, you will have to pay a penalty of 5% of the tax due for each month, or part of a month, the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance requires that you file for an automatic six-month extension if you cannot file your tax return by April 15, 2015.
