General Instructions

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation does not require you to file a Rhode Island extension form if you meet all the following tests:

  • You are not required to make payment with Rhode Island extension form; and
  • You file a proper federal extension form; and
  • Your request for extension covers the same time period for both Rhode Island and federal purposes.

If you meet the criteria above, there is nothing to be filed at this time. You must attach a copy of Federal Form 4868 or the electronic acknowledgement you receive from the IRS to the front of the Rhode Island return when it is filed.

Rhode Island grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file until October 15, 2015.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

The filing or granting of an extension of time to file does not extend the time for payment of tax due on the return.

Visa, MasterCard, Discover Network, and American Express credit and debit cards, and other forms of payment, such as Bill Me Later® are accepted. To make a debit card payment you can use a MasterCard or Visa Debit Card or any debit card with Nyce, Pulse or Star logos.

There is a convenience fee for this service which is paid directly to the company. The amount of the fee is based on the amount of your payment.
