fathers dayI think the sweet grandmother in the movie Parenthood said it best, “Your grandpa took me on a roller coaster… Up, down. Up, down – oh what a ride. It was just interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited and so thrilled all together. Some didn’t like it. They went on the merry-go-round – that just goes around – nothing. I like the roller coaster; you get more out of it.”

So many changes come with becoming a father – physically and emotionally – it’s just like the Grandma said – a roller coaster ride.

We all know the physical toll it takes on a man when he becomes a dad. It happens in those early months of fatherhood. No sleep, eating whatever you can get your hands on, combined with the stress of adjusting to a leaking newborn can have adverse effects on a man’s physique.

And the emotional toll – well – that continues right to the end. The roller coaster ride is only beginning for those new dads celebrating their first Father’s Day this weekend. The handmade cards, the hospital visits, the driving lessons, the late-night calls, the breakups, and the college considerations can send a father into a labyrinth of emotions.

Sure, becoming a dad changes your life, but the benefits of being a dad outweigh the trade-offs any day.

Fathers build the future – they help shape us into the individuals that we blossom into. The valuable lessons that I learned from my own father – that true love is unconditional, that you don’t always have to be perfect, and that girls can do it too – still stick with me and I have passed them on to my children.

For all of the dads out there, especially those celebrating their first Father’s Day, Liberty Tax® wishes you all of the heartfelt rewards and lasting memories that fatherhood brings.

And don’t forget one more positive change a child can bring you – a tax deduction! Before you stop in to see us next year, check out my blog to review what documentation to bring along to your tax interview. In the meantime, please keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times.
