• For example, you forgot to claim some income, you received a Form 1099 or a Schedule K-1 after you had already filed your initial return
• Generally, you must file the amended return within 3 years from the date your original return was due
• A Form 1040-X may be e-filed only if you are amending your 2019 or 2020 tax return
• Amended returns for a pre-2019 tax year must be mailed to the IRS as a paper return
